Parents and Family
Student Privacy- Your student’s privacy is protected by the 1974 Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, also known as the Buckley Amendment and FERPA. Student information maintained by the University is part of the educational record, including but not limited to all biographical, application and grading data. Other than public information classified as “directory information”, information cannot be released without express written consent of the student. Your student can grant access of certain information to you by completing the Student Information Proxy Release Form available online.
Community Safety - UNM takes the safety of our student and the campus community very seriously. UNM has its own police department which patrols and provides 24-hour security. Additional measures such as a campus-wide emergency communication system, on-request security escort service, various crime prevention and education programs, as well as the LoboAlerts Emergency Messaging service, all contribute to making UNM’s campus safe. Information related to crime definitions, statistics and resources are contained within the "Annual Report" available on the UNM Police Department website.
Student Health - The Student Health & Counseling center provides health and counseling services to all UNM students. In addition to pharmacy, counseling, immunization and allergy services, the SHAC also provides comprehensive outpatient healthcare services with physicians who are board certified in Family Practice and Internal Medicine.
Financial Assistance - Most UNM students receive some form of financial assistance for educational costs. All students and families are encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) – even if you believe you won’t qualify. In addition to being a requirement for some scholarships, a completed FAFSA enables the Student Financial Aid Office to review your need for assistance in the event that your family’s financial circumstances change dramatically. Completing the FAFSA by March 1 ensures that your student will receive the best possible consideration for all types of financial assistance.
